Artist
Statement
Alyn
Shannon has been a freelance graphic designer for over 25 years,
designing a wide variety of print projects, social stationery and
retail gift products. Alyn enjoys applying her design skills and
spiritual inspirations to jewelry making. Certified in Precious Metal
Clay, and a member of the PMC Guild, Alyn studied lampworking, fused
glass and silversmithing at
the White Bear Center for the Arts.
Alyn
and her husband founded buya.org, a non-profit company that promotes
small, passionate grassroots charities. Alyn and Jeff also run the
Healing
Haiti mission that has built a school, cistern and latrine in
the mountains
of Lespinasse, Haiti. All profits from her jewelry sales
go to buya.org to
help the poor and most vulnerable.

A
tiny heart in silver leaf is fused in ruby red glass about
3/4" square. Sterling silver bail and 16" oval bead
chain make
it a lovely keepsake. Every piece of
glass is hand cut,
polished and fired in my studio. Each

Healing
Haiti, a mission of buya.org founded by my husband, Jeff Gacek and I,
are raising funds for a new building for 31 children currently living
in a small 2 room house with no windows, no bathroom, no electricity,
no running water and no tables. They ate squatting in the hot sun or
crowded in the bedroom. 16 boys in one room and 15 girls in another.
Jeff recently spent 2 months in Haiti researching this project and I
met these kids in December. We gave each child a pair of crocs, raised
funds from my bible study group to have church clothes made for each
child along with a tote filled with underwear, toothpaste and brushes,
a little candy treat, toys and t-shirts. Buya.org has raised funds
needed for tables and benches, new mattresses, a digital camera and
laptop computer for communication with us, as well as some emergency
food and medical help.
The
expereince of meeting these kids filled my heart. They are so precious
and I want to make sure these kids get a chance at a healthy life
filled with opportunity that is not availabe in Haiti without our help.
So I am on a mission.
I want to raise funds to build this orphanage moving one
heart at a time. I thought this
would be a great opportunity to create a meaningful
and purposeful gift.
